Hebestreit Branch

Pauline Hebestreit was our Nana’s mother. Her parents were Johann Nicholas Hebestreit and Christina Hohl and the story is told that they met on the ship coming to America.

Johann Nicholas Hebestreit

Christina Hohl came from Germany Age 20 on the ship Barnholm out of London. Arrived in New Orleans Nov 11, 1846 Ship master was Nason. There were not any other Hohl’s listed on the ship. . . Christina & Nicholas met on ship - Their first born was Cecilia Hebestreit 22 Nov 1848. . .

We think this note was written by Elynor Estein.

Christina Hohl Hebestreit

As stated in Elizabeth Arnaud’s letter, Mathilda Hebestreit Fitzsimons was her grandmother and was sister to Cecilia, Pauline and Amelia. Elizabeth (Betty) Arnaud and Elynor Estein Brown, our Nana’s niece and our mother’s second cousin, corresponded regarding the family history and it seems that Elynor sent a few of these letters to our mother.

The Mysterious Silver

Our mother had a candlestick engraved with Mr & Mrs J. V. and the dates 1879 and 1904. There was also a silver bowl that with the entwined initials AV and JV and the date March 19th 1879-1907. We had always been curious about this silver but the only clue we had was a photo of a woman labelled “Amelia V.” It wasn’t until we were putting this website together that we found a photo with a handwritten label “Great Uncle Joe and Great Aunt Amelia Voegtle” that we now know was penned by our mother’s second cousin, Elynor Estein. Below that, in our mother’s handwriting, was “The ones responsible for all the lovely silver things I have” and explained that that the silver was given to Joseph and Amelia Voegtle on their 25th wedding anniversary. Amelia was Amelia Hebestreit, Pauline’s sister, and therefore our Nana’s aunt and our mother’s great-aunt. Amelia married Joseph Voegtle on March 19, 1879, and they celebrated their 25th anniversary in 1904. Joseph was the well known proprietor of the Cosmopolitan Hotel in New Orleans. This is the very same hotel where our Nana and Papa met and which story was passed down and told to us (See Bracken Family).
